Trek Overview
The Gokyo Lakes Trek offers a spectacular alternative to EBC, leading to sacred turquoise glacial lakes beneath Cho Oyu (8,188m).
Climb Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for views of four 8,000m peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The Ngozumpa Glacier stretches endlessly below.
The turquoise lakes against towering peaks create some of the most photographed landscapes in the Everest region.
Discover the Hidden Gem of the Everest Region
The Gokyo Lakes Trek is one of Nepal's most spectacular trekking adventures, offering an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Everest region while avoiding the crowds of the classic Everest Base Camp trail. This remarkable trek combines crystal-clear glacial lakes, towering Himalayan peaks, authentic Sherpa culture, and breathtaking panoramic viewpoints, making it an ideal choice for trekkers seeking both adventure and tranquility.
Located within the world-renowned Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Gokyo Lakes Trek takes you through picturesque Sherpa villages, alpine forests, glacier valleys, and pristine mountain landscapes before reaching the magnificent Gokyo Valley. Every stage of the trek reveals a new side of the Himalayas, offering unforgettable scenery and authentic cultural experiences.
Journey Through the Khumbu Valley
The adventure begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. From there, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through charming Sherpa settlements, suspension bridges, pine forests, and rhododendron woodlands before arriving at the bustling mountain town of Namche Bazaar.
After spending time acclimatizing in Namche Bazaar, the trail leaves the busy Everest Base Camp route and heads northwest toward the peaceful Gokyo Valley. The journey passes through traditional villages such as Dole, Luza, and Machhermo, where stunning mountain views and authentic Himalayan hospitality accompany every step.
As the elevation increases, dense forests gradually give way to alpine meadows, glacial moraines, and dramatic high-altitude landscapes, creating one of the most scenic trekking experiences in Nepal.
Explore the Spectacular Gokyo Lakes
The highlight of the trek is undoubtedly the breathtaking Gokyo Lakes, a chain of six turquoise glacial lakes located at some of the highest elevations on Earth. These pristine lakes are considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists and are surrounded by snow-covered mountains, rugged cliffs, and the impressive Ngozumpa Glacier.
The peaceful atmosphere of Gokyo Village, situated beside the third lake, offers a perfect place to relax while enjoying spectacular reflections of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Many trekkers also explore the upper lakes, where the untouched landscapes provide incredible opportunities for photography and quiet moments in nature.
Climb Gokyo Ri for Unforgettable Himalayan Views
One of the most rewarding experiences of the trek is climbing Gokyo Ri (5,357 meters). Although the ascent requires determination, the panoramic views from the summit are widely regarded as some of the finest in the Himalayas.
From the top, trekkers can admire four of the world's highest mountains—Mount Everest (8,848.86 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m), and Cho Oyu (8,188 m)—along with Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Thamserku, Cholatse, and countless surrounding peaks. Sunrise from Gokyo Ri is an unforgettable spectacle that rewards every step of the climb.
Walk Beside the Ngozumpa Glacier
Another unforgettable highlight of the Gokyo Lakes Trek is the opportunity to walk alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Nepal Himalayas. Stretching for over 35 kilometers, this immense river of ice creates a dramatic landscape of glacial moraines, frozen streams, and rugged mountain terrain.
The glacier adds a unique dimension to the trek and offers visitors an incredible opportunity to witness the power and beauty of the Himalayan environment up close.
Experience Authentic Sherpa Culture
Beyond its natural beauty, the Gokyo Lakes Trek offers a rich cultural experience through the traditional Sherpa communities that call the Everest region home.
Throughout the journey, you'll pass ancient monasteries, colorful prayer flags, mani walls, and spinning prayer wheels while learning about the customs, traditions, and mountain lifestyle of the Sherpa people. Staying in family-operated teahouses allows trekkers to enjoy warm hospitality, delicious local cuisine, and meaningful interactions with local families.
The slower pace of the Gokyo route provides plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the unique culture that has shaped the Everest region for centuries.
Discover the Wildlife of Sagarmatha National Park
The Gokyo Lakes Trek passes through Sagarmatha National Park, one of Nepal's most important protected mountain ecosystems. The park is home to diverse plant life, alpine forests, and rare Himalayan wildlife.
Trekkers may encounter Himalayan Tahr, Musk Deer, Himalayan Monal, Blood Pheasants, and numerous bird species along the trail. Lucky visitors may even catch a glimpse of the elusive Snow Leopard or Himalayan Wolf in the higher alpine regions.
The combination of exceptional biodiversity and spectacular mountain scenery makes the journey especially rewarding for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
Comfortable Teahouse Trekking Experience
The Gokyo Lakes Trek follows a well-developed teahouse route, allowing trekkers to enjoy comfortable accommodation throughout the journey.
Locally owned mountain lodges provide clean rooms, freshly prepared meals, hot drinks, and welcoming hospitality after each day of trekking. Evenings are spent relaxing beside warm dining stoves while sharing stories with fellow trekkers from around the world, creating memorable cultural exchanges and lasting friendships.
Is the Gokyo Lakes Trek Right for You?

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Explore each phase of this Himalayan expedition
Early in the morning nearly about 6 am to 10 am, we drive to Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu for a 35-minute scenic flight to Tenzing and Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,804m).
On arrival at the airport, your guide will brief you about the trekking and introduce our porters. Before we begin our trek towards Phakding (2,610m), we have time to explore Lukla while our Sherpa crew sort and load our trekking equipment.
We start the trek by descending towards Dudh Kosi River where we join the main trail to Namche Bazaar, located just above Chaunrikharka (2,713m). The walking is easy and after passing through the small village of Ghat (2,550m) it is a short walk to Phakding.

Trip Essentials
Important preparation guidelines, packing checklists, permits, and health safety for this expedition.
Best Season & Weather Conditions
Himalayan weather changes dynamically across altitudes. The two premier windows for this journey are Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May). Autumn offers exceptionally crisp atmospheric clarity, dry trails, and the most consistent mountain panoramas. Spring provides longer daylight hours, warmer daytime temperatures, and hillsides adorned with blooming rhododendrons and alpine flora.
Packing List & Gear Checklist
A three-tier layering system is essential to adapt comfortably between warm daytime hiking and freezing mountain nights. Your main gear (up to 10–12 kg) is carried inside a waterproof duffel bag by our porter team, while you carry a light 30–35 L daypack for your camera, water, and warm layers.
- Upper Body: Thermal base layers (Merino wool), lightweight fleece mid-layer, heavy down jacket (-15°C rated), waterproof & windproof outer shell (GORE-TEX).
- Lower Body: Thermal bottoms, quick-dry trekking pants, waterproof over-trousers.
- Footwear: Sturdy, well-broken-in waterproof trekking boots with ankle support, camp sandals, and 4–5 pairs of merino wool hiking socks.
- Accessories: 4-season sleeping bag, UV-blocking sunglasses (Cat 3/4), warm fleece beanie, sun hat, windproof gloves, trekking poles, and a 300+ lumen headlamp with spare batteries.
Permits, Visas & Entry Regulations
All required national park entry permits, TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) cards, and local municipality fees are fully organized and handled by the Magical Ascents operations team before your trek begins.
Nepal Tourist Visa: Most nationalities obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu). Standard visa fees are US $30 (15 days), US $50 (30 days), or US $125 (90 days), payable in cash or major credit cards. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date and carry 4 passport-size photographs.
Altitude Acclimatization & Physical Fitness
Trekking in the Himalayas requires good cardiovascular endurance and leg stamina rather than technical mountaineering skills. We recommend starting aerobic workouts (jogging, cycling, stair climbing, and loaded day hikes) 4–6 weeks prior to arrival.
Acclimatization Golden Rules: Ascend at a slow, rhythmic pace ("Bistari, Bistari"), drink 3–4 liters of clean water daily, and consume plenty of carbohydrates. Our certified mountain guides conduct daily morning and evening SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation) and pulse checks using medical-grade oximeters to ensure your body is adapting safely.
Teahouses, Meals & Drinking Water
Accommodation during the trek is in authentic mountain teahouses with twin-bed rooms, comfortable foam mattresses, and warm communal dining halls heated by central wood or yak-dung stoves. Dining features fresh, wholesome options including the famous Dal Bhat (lentils, rice, vegetable curry with unlimited complimentary refills), noodle soups, momos, eggs, oats, and pancakes.
Safe Hydration: To protect the delicate Himalayan ecosystem, we actively discourage single-use plastic bottles. We recommend bringing a reusable insulated bottle (Nalgene) and treating tap/boiled water with purification tablets or a Steripen UV purifier. Boiled water is also available for purchase at all teahouses.
Travel Insurance & Emergency Evacuation
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all guests participating in our Himalayan expeditions. Your policy must specifically cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and emergency helicopter rescue/evacuation up to 5,500 meters (18,000 feet).
In the rare event of severe acute mountain sickness (AMS) or sudden illness, our guides initiate immediate descent protocols and our 24/7 Kathmandu operations desk coordinates rapid helicopter evacuation with top certified aviation operators and hospitals in Kathmandu.
